How important is VM sizing?

VM sizing helps to improve VDI performance and save money. By accurately determining the appropriate VM sizes based on user requirements and usage patterns, it helps IT teams to efficiently allocate resources and ensure optimal system performance. Proper VM sizing enables administrators to effectively optimize resources, leading to smoother and faster desktop operations which ultimately enhances the end-user digital experience (DEX).

What does it do?

VM Optimization involves:

  1. Analyzing resource usage: Monitoring the CPU and memory usage of VMs over a time period (e.g., 30/60/90 days) to identify usage patterns.

  2. Identifying over- and under-provisioned VMs: Based on predefined criteria (e.g., average CPU < 25% or memory < 40% for oversized VMs, and average CPU > 75% or memory > 75% for undersized VMs), VMs are categorized as over or under-provisioned.

  3. Providing actionable insights: Provides a dashboard and reports that allow admins to make informed decisions about VM resource allocation and optimization, and where action may need to be taken.

Use cases:

  1. User redistribution: When users with undersized or oversized desktops are identified in a pool, move them to other pools with appropriate VM configurations to improve efficiency.

  2. Pool resizing: Adjust the pool configuration where many users may have undersized or oversized desktops, ensuring optimal resource allocation.

  3. Historical analysis: Analyse historical CPU & memory usage trends to determine optimal VM sizing. Use this data to adjust VM configurations, ensuring that resources are neither over nor under-allocated.
